About us

Rex Wingate & Partners was established at Havant in 1948 and Park Gate in 1964, but the Wingate family have been Opticians for 150 years. George Melson Wingate (pictured Left) was a jeweller/watchmaker in Plymouth and was one of the first to take British Optical Examinations as an Ophthalmic Optician in 1897. We still have his original testing equipment on display at our Havant practice. Rex Wingate was the third generation of the Wingate family to be an Optician and now his son Graham (pictured below) is the senior optometrist.

We have always been pioneers in the introduction of new technology and innovation. In 1974 we were the first to introduce regular screening for Glaucoma with non-contact tonometry, and in 1988 the first to introduce retinal photography as a routine procedure, particularly important for Diabetes. More recently in the early 2000s we were among the very first practices to have OCT scanning instruments for the early detection and monitoring of Macula disease and Glaucoma.

Our aim has always been to offer as personal, friendly, and caring service as possible.
